I WAS A MEMBER OF THE KELLAM
MARCHING KNIGHTS (DRUM LINE) FROM 1984-1987 AND I HAVE MANY
MANY GOOD MEMORIES FROM THE BAND FROM ALL THE LOVE AND
FRIENDSHIP I MADE. I HAVE TO SAY WE HAD THE BEST DRUM
INSTRUCTOR IN VA BEACH FROM 1984-87 (BILL PENDERGRASS WHO
MARCHED WITH THE 27TH LANCERS AND PRINCESS ANN HIGH SCHOOL).
HE MADE THE DRUM LINE THE BEST EVER. THE 1987 SEASON WAS THE
BEST EVER IN SCHOOL HISTORY. WE WENT TO 6 MARCHING EVENTS
THAT YEAR AND ALWAYS TOOK FIRST PLACE IN DRUMS. THEN AT CARY
BAND DAY WE HAD THE BEST SHOW OF THE YEAR BUT WE TOOK SECOND
PLACE BEHIND W. T. WOODSON. MY BEST YEAR OF BEING IN
THE DRUM LINE WAS THE 1987 CARY BAND DAY. AND BEING ON STAFF
WITH THE DRUM LINE FROM 2000-2004 WILL BE ONE THAT I WILL
NEVER FORGET.

About me: Wow... So glad Arnold pointed out this site to me. *waving to Barbara* Yes, I was there the year we moved to those horrible bumble bee uniforms... ouch. And I remember the curved poles too. And the pink flags! The one thing I remember most is how passionate Barbara and Tara were with our routines. The "marching" band in the town where I live now plays wonderfully, but has no direction for marching. At half time, they march on the feild, play, and march off. That's it. I've often thought of Barbara and the staff and how HARD we worked on drilling in those weeks before school started, and how sharp we were because of it. The discipline I learned back then has served me well... I'm now an author of five published novels and I'm signing a contract for a sixth in the next few days. Unfortunately, I was only able to participate with the Marching Knights for my sophomore year. I had to turn in my flagpole and boots for a baby stroller and diapers, and a full time job, a little more than half-way through the season. But I did graduate from Kellam two years later, got married and all is well these days. I'd love to find Malkie (anyone remember her?) and others from the Drill team. I DID have some fun with Marius Payton a couple of years ago. Turns out he moved to Salt Lake City not long after graduation to attend Westminster, and he was an on-air TV sports guy for our local ABC affiliate for a while. In fact, he was the weekend sports ANCHOR before he took a job with a cable sports station back east and abandoned me to the wilds of Utah alone *sobbing* (j/k... it's really not that bad lol). Anyway, we ran into each other online and I drove up to Salt Lake City where he was kind enough to give me and a couple of fellow writers a tour of the TV station. We even got to sit on the set, just off camera, while he did the evening news. Pretty kewl. I've rambled enough, I think. Laters! |

1988 | jwwhorn@hotmail.com | French Horn |
I was a "band geek" from 1986-1988 on the French Horn.
I marched with the 9 time World Champion CADETS drum and bugle corps
from 1989-1991 then pursued a degree in music education. I
accepted a job in the Charlotte Symphony from
1996-1999 and returned to Virginia Beach in 1999 and continued to
perform with the Virginia Symphony, Richmond Symphony, North
Carolina Symphony, Broadway, you name it. I did a lot of
marching band instruction, brass caption, drill
writing. I have played with many great artists and studied
with some of the world's finest horn players. Currently I teach High
School Band at Churchland HS in Portsmouth, VA and still actively
perform on the horn around the Hampton Roads area. Some of our
band alumni are still around. They have all done well and hold
prestigious positions. Please remember that you were part of a great
band at Kellam in the mid to late 80's, there are very few programs
left in the State like that one. I am married with one kid and another on the way! Thanks for putting up this alumni site. I will spread the word. Dave Correll is doing great in Tennessee, I talked to him about 2 years ago and he sent some CD's of the band. He sends his best to everyone. |
